World News: After conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, now signs of a new war are appearing in Asia. China is taking aggressive steps to take control of Taiwan. On Tuesday, this tension increased sharply when Taiwan spotted 21 Chinese fighter jets entering its airspace.
China wants to control more areas in the South China Sea, and experts believe it could attack Taiwan anytime. Chinese jets have been flying close to Taiwan’s borders regularly. On Tuesday, while these planes entered Taiwan’s air zone, a large explosion happened in a battery factory in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Though it is said to be an accident, there is suspicion that China may be involved.
China’s growing military moves are becoming a major concern for Taiwan. President Lai Ching-te is under pressure as his government tries to deal with this threat. One more problem is the unclear stand of US President Donald Trump. Although America sends weapons to Taiwan, Trump’s silence and lack of strong action make the island feel unsupported. China may be taking advantage of this situation.
At around 6 a.m. on July 15, Taiwan's military spotted 26 Chinese jets near its borders. Out of them, 21 planes flew into Taiwan's defense zone. Along with this, 7 Chinese navy ships were also seen in the sea nearby, and one Chinese aircraft carrier came dangerously close to the border line.
In response, the Taiwanese military became active. Troops were sent to border areas and they started practicing emergency war drills to stay prepared for any attack.
For the past week, China has been conducting a military drill called Han Kuang in the South China Sea. The latest airspace violations by Chinese planes happened during this drill. In response, Taiwan began its own exercises to defend against enemy landings. Soldiers carrying Stinger missiles joined these drills. Taiwan also practiced sending supplies through metro tunnels and tested how to destroy Chinese landing vehicles. Meanwhile, work began to quickly repair military airstrips in case of any damage.
During the Chinese intrusion, a major explosion took place in Taiwan’s biggest lithium battery plant in Kaohsiung. While early reports say it might be an accident, some believe China could be behind it. This has added to Taiwan’s worry and the military has gone on high alert. Surprisingly, the U.S. has not shown any direct involvement in Taiwan’s recent defense moves.
